Jhenukdah to Jhenaidah
The present Jhenaidah region was originally a subdivision of Jashore district. In 1862, Jhenaidah region was established as a subdivision. Then in 1984, Jhenaidah was established as a full-fledged district. It is said that once upon a time the river 'Naboganga' in Jhenaidah was a very useful place for collecting oysters, a material for calcium production, and traders from far and wide, especially from Calcutta, used to come here to collect oysters, and at that time this area of obtaining oysters was known as Jhenukdah. According to many, the region is known as 'Jhenaidah' due to the combination of the regional word 'Jhenai' for 'Mussel (Jhenuk)' and the Persian term 'Dah' for a large and deep 'reservoir'.
Courts of Jhenaidah
When Jhenaidah was transformed into a district in 1984, District and Sessions Judge Courts were established in Jhenaidah in 1985. Earlier, there was a sub-judge's court and a munsef court at Jhenaidah under the Jashore district judge's court while the area was under Jashore district. Till 1990, Jhenaidah District and Sessions Judge's Court was located on the bank of Naboganga river near Jhenaidah city center. But over time, due to population growth, increasing people's involvement with the city and people's urban orientation, the Bangladesh government decided to relocate the main offices of the district and session judge courts, district administration, police department to the far western side of the city as part of the new city plan. Accordingly, the district and session judge's court was set up in Goeshpur Mauza near the city leaving the noise of the city.
Judges of Jhenaidah
Mr. Md. Moazzem Hossain Chowdhury, who served as District and Sessions Judge in this district from 1985 to 1987, was the first District and Sessions Judge in this district. There are several learned judges who have worked in this district and later graced the judicial post of Hon'ble Supreme Court. The attraction of the people of this region towards the judiciary is unique. At present, the number of judges working in the subordinate courts of Bangladesh is the largest number of residents of this district.
